Textured Flexible Stone (Granite-Look) — A Lightweight Stone Solution for the Exterior Cladding of Hefei Institute of Economics and Trade
This project involves the comprehensive decorative upgrade of the exterior facades of buildings at Hefei University of Economics and Trade in Hefei, Anhui Province. The goal was to enhance the visual appeal of the campus architecture using stone textures that are natural, rustic, and architecturally expressive, while simultaneously meeting the multifaceted requirements for material weight, construction efficiency, and aesthetic quality across a large surface area. The design team sought a wall cladding material that could replicate the rugged, natural texture of granite while offering the benefits of lightweight construction and ease of installation, thereby creating a facade that is dignified, minimalist, and modern.
After evaluating traditional exterior cladding materials—such as natural stone—the project team selected our "Soft Stone" (flexible stone) rough-textured granite series. These products, measuring 300×600×2.5 mm, are lightweight, flexible, easy to cut, and simple to install, offering significant advantages over traditional, heavy stone in terms of transport, handling, and on-site application.
The rough granite texture provides rich visual depth and authentic stone characteristics, lending the campus buildings a genuine, natural appearance, while the material's flexibility allows for greater versatility during the installation process.
This project involves the application of approximately 20,000 square meters of flexible stone with a textured granite finish, primarily installed on the exterior walls of buildings at Hefei University of Economics and Trade. The use of consistent stone textures and color schemes creates a harmonious visual effect across the various building facades. The standard 300×600mm format facilitates on-site layout, cutting, and installation, while the slim 2.5mm profile eliminates the bulkiness associated with traditional stone, making both transport and on-site handling more convenient. Under natural light, the textured granite finish reveals rich interplay between light and shadow, adding subtle depth to the facades while preserving the dignified, rustic aesthetic of natural granite.
For large-scale exterior wall projects like those on a university campus, installation efficiency is a critical factor. Compared to traditional, heavy stone, this flexible textured granite is lightweight and offers greater versatility during transport, handling, cutting, and installation, allowing it to adapt to the specific requirements of different facade areas.
Its flexibility ensures a superior fit against the wall surface, resulting in a seamless and cohesive decorative finish. Furthermore, the material’s water- and moisture-resistant properties meet the demands of the exterior environment, offering a solution that balances aesthetic appeal with practical functionality for the campus architecture.
Upon completion of the project, the exterior walls of the Hefei Institute of Economics and Trade campus buildings display a natural, dignified, and layered stone-like appearance. The expansive rough-textured granite finish harmonizes with the overall architectural style, lending the facades enhanced texture and visual impact. The natural stone grain not only adds depth to the building elevations but also fosters a unified and cohesive visual language across the various structures. Spanning approximately 20,000 square meters, this project demonstrates the significant potential of rough-textured granite-style flexible stone for large-scale campus exterior applications.
With its slim 300×600×2.5mm profile, realistic rough-textured granite appearance, and lightweight, flexible nature, this material offers a decorative solution for the institute's facades that balances the aesthetic appeal of stone with ease of installation. Beyond campus buildings, it is suitable for a wide range of applications—including business parks, commercial complexes, hotels, residential developments, and public buildings—providing a lightweight and versatile stone-effect option for modern architectural facades.
